Online Businesses - Is The One You Want To Join Legal?

With the number of online businesses growing everyday, many people get involved before they know what they are involved in. The fact is that governments from many different countries are starting to crackdown on internet businesses that they consider to be illegal. You may be an innocent, honest person hoping to make some money but if your involved, your part of the problem. Learn to identify what makes a MLM or online business suspicious and possibly illegal.

When you look at the business, check to see exactly how you will be making income. If the income source is from attaining new members it is a plan or concept based business. This means that the only way it can sustain itself is from recruiting new members. If this is the only source of income it is a suspicious MLM.

Most of the dubious MLM schemes online are savvy enough to cover themselves by selling a product. The product itself may be just a loop-hole they are using. If the product is obviously over-priced and if the purchasers are only “distributors” or members, chances are good the business is going to be investigated at some point because it is a red flag for suspicious business practices.

For instance in Canada, deceptive practices of MLM and Pyramid schemes include:

Showing income representations without disclosing adequate income received by typical participants.
Paying money to members who recruit new members.
Requiring or having a condition wherein new members must buy products in order to participate.
Selling ridiculous amounts of product (inventory loading) to members.
Having inadequate product return policies.

In the United States, check with The Federal Trade Commission.

It doesn’t seem right that so many hopeful people are misled by these kinds of schemes but it happens everyday. The only way to protect yourself and others from dishonest business practices is to be aware.

There are some legal MLM online businesses but try to check before you get involved. One problem I encountered with researching an online business was that when I searched "scam" and the business name, I came to sites where members portrayed the business as not a scam and were basically recruiting new members. So my best advice is to keep the above info in mind.

New Cautions on Online Businesses

Cautionary signs of online businesses update:
Your customers are new distributors that you have recruited.
Your income is mostly based on new recruits to the business.
Products are sold only to other distributors and are overpriced.
Products are used to avoid being classified as an illegal pyramid scheme or illegal MLM.
Enticements used to hook new recruits:
Promises of hundreds of dollars for doing virtually no work.
Selling the dream, ie: pictures of fancy cars, vacation spots and houses. Being able to work when you want and quitting your day job. (Isn’t this the same dream that makes us buy lotto tickets)?

Because these kinds of businesses are rampant online, due caution is required. Learn from other peoples mistakes and if there is nobody talking, use the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Protection information to decide if the business is good, bad or ugly. According to The Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Protection, October 2000. “When products or services are sold only to distributors like yourself, there’s no way to make money.”

Online Business Opportunites: Look Before You Leap

If you’re new to the Internet process of making money online there’s a lot to learn. How to you know what is a real opportunity and what is a scam? The opportunities that come up in a search for online businesses can be overwhelming. Most people are looking for honest opportunities with little or no risk. When looking at opportunities you can follow some simple steps to keep you from losing money.

Here are some things that should raise a red flag when you hit on a site:

There is an enormous amount quoted for what you can make per day for only a few hours of work. There are pages and pages repeated the enormous earnings claims and then beneath it all, there is an earnings disclaimer.

They want you to pay money before you know what you will really be doing to earn the money.

They do not have a guarantee.

There are also good signs that a company is the real deal:

The business opportunity lets you try it first for a very low price or free to see what it’s all about. They make it is easy to cancel your membership if you want out.

Good picks also will offer you a money back guarantee. Make sure you understand the guarantee and print it out.

They clearly explain how you make money.

Here’s how to know what you’re getting into:

Search for scams associated with the company’s name. Many people who try businesses online post their comments on blogs. You will find out exactly what their experience was. Compare to other comments posted about the business. If it is a good opportunity you will find good comments.

Do your research. Check with the BBB and other scam review sites for postings.
